Working Through It: What aspects of business continuity planning helped in response to COVID-19

The pandemic has exposed gaps in business continuity preparations for many organizations, with companies lacking robust plans finding themselves struggling to adjust and respond. For those with more comprehensive plans, however, adjustments to the new operating environment haven’t been painless, but have been smoother. While not all these plans have been identical, there have been common themes among many that can be used for insight into how your organization might want to update their own preparations, including:

  • Focusing on identification of critical business functions, which require immediate update, rather than allowing for delayed restoration
  • Establishing a clear and comprehensive structure for incident management
  • Identifying in advance teams and members who will be responsible for incident response activities
  • Identifying minimum staffing needs, and ensuring the necessary tools are available to them to support remote work
