Women on Fire: Innovative Tecumseh Fire Department Program Aims For Diversity

Women on Fire is a 100-person Canadian program held in Windsor, ON for women interested in roles on the front lines of disaster. Meant to promote diversity within the emergency service field, the annual event — now in its second year — includes a variety of skills challenges from different fields including Fire, Police, Canada Border Services Agency, Emergency Medical Services, or Canadian Armed Forces. The challenges included a mix of written, practical and physical tests, including having participants climb a four storey tower while carrying 42 pounds of fire hose.

“We’re all public service, fire, police, EMS, we serve the public, we serve our communities, and it’s important for serving the community to be able to relate to the community,” Tecumseh Fire volunteer firefighter and one of the event organizers Donna Desantis told The Windsor Star. “The more diverse your department is the better connections you’re making with your community members and the better service you’ll be able to provide.”
