What’s Old Is New Again: Cybersecurity trends show many old attacks making a comeback

As companies continue to shift toward onsite work again, many find themselves with a new set of cybersecurity threats to deal with, with IT needing to strike a balance between remote and more traditional security concerns. While not comprehensive, many of these IT teams can look to take advantage of lists of identified trends to help focus their efforts on more critical threats, based on what was observed through 2020. Ranging from the rapid rise of work from home creating many new potential points requiring proper securing, to the increased use of brute force taking advantage of botnets to drive DDoS attacks, or even older threats like ransomware or phishing, the magnitude of challenges faced by cybersecurity teams continues to both grow and change, according to an article in Security Intelligence.

In particular, cybersecurity threats related to COVID remain notably high, as hackers look to take advantage of the anxiety around the threat of the virus, through the use of targeted emails including schemes like fake vaccination appointment emails. Similar attacks have also been launched on the vaccine supply chain, as cybercriminals seek to compromise the vaccine’s cold chain. These phishing attacks will likely remain common, so long as COVID continues to be a major threat to both individuals and nations.
