Weathering the Storm: Emergency operations centers need to work to ensure readiness for hurricane season

With hurricane season fast approaching and expected to be an active one, we’re already at the point where Emergency Operations Centers (EOCs) need to be ramping up, according to Security Magazine. At the middle of business continuity, crisis communications, and emergency response, these centers need to ready at a minute’s notice to coordinate critical activities to ensure companies at risk of disruption due to natural disaster can manage their resources.

To do so, EOCs have to consider two things – preparedness and redundancy. Preparedness will ensure personnel are trained and know their roles, and that equipment is fully tested, operational, and available in sufficient quantities such that emergency operations can be ramped up in the event a storm suddenly takes a turn for the worse. For redundancy, EOCs should check for single points of failure, particularly with respect to communications, and put plans or resources in place to mitigate potential disruptions. Alternately, an entire backup EOC can be assembled, to allow for rapid changeover of coordination, should the primary EOC be flooded or otherwise find itself without power.

While an EOC shouldn’t be needed all the time, ensuring they’re stocked and ready can help smooth response in the event they are needed.
