Under Attack

The recent news has been filled with stories of hurricanes, floods, fires, and blizzards, all of which have been capable of disrupting a company’s normal operation. In response, companies have worked to develop plans to ensure their data is safe from these impersonal forces, to their long-term benefit. However, with these stories filling the news, it’s been easy for companies to overlook the serious threats posed by targeted attacks, as individual hackers and criminal organizations work to breach cybersecurity defenses.

With cyberattacks on the rise, companies should be constantly revisiting their plans, to ensure they’re ready in the event they find themselves targets. In particular, companies should be aware of these particular cybersecurity threats, according to Tech Target:

  • Ransomware – in addition to the traditional ransomware attack, hackers are also modifying their approaches to go after backups or targeting cloud systems.
  • Island Hopping – rather than using a company’s hacked resources to steal that company’s data, hackers are instead using these compromised accounts and services to commit fraud against business partners, vendors, or other affiliated organizations
  • Lack of Compliance – with new legislation rolling in regarding the protection of customer data, companies need to ensure they’re in compliance with cybersecurity standards. Otherwise, a hack could hurt twice, with a company both losing data, and being subject to fines for failing to properly protect their resources
