Under Attack: Ukrainian IT professionals talk about the challenges of working in a war zone

While IT professionals sometimes feel like they’re figuratively under siege, those working in Ukraine know what the experience is truly like. Struggling to keep their systems going, while also doing what they can to keep their friends and families safe, these workers face a unique set of challenges, particularly since the IT sector is an enormous part of Ukraine’s economy.

With the invasion launching on February 24, companies were rapid to respond. Says Ivan Babichuk, chairman of the Lviv IT Cluster supervisory board, to Information Week, “Most companies had their business continuity plans ready. Immediately, every company knew what to do. In a matter of two days, most of them had relocated the majority of their employees to safer places.”

Many companies also put in extra efforts to help with the safety of employees. Said Anastasia Dzhohola, who handles public relations for IT companies QArea and TestFort, to Information Week, “On the first day, in order to provide shelter for employees who do not want to leave, we set up shelters in our offices.” Dzhohola also noted that, as the threats from the attack on Ukraine grew, these companies also worked to assist employees with relocation, saying “More than 90% of employees are now in relative safety.”

Even in this relative safety, challenges continue. “Bombings have continued for more than a month already. The new reality of the bomb shelters and air raid alarms has become quotidian,” Hanna Zasukha, marketing manager with Lemon.io, said to Information Week. “People write in the corporate Slack about their air-raid warnings, beg pardon for disconnections, and work from the shelters from time to time.”
