Turnover Trouble: Almost a third of companies have experienced business continuity challenges caused by employees not handing over their passwords before departing

With passwords being a constant source of trouble for companies, whether due to employees forgetting them, or as a target of hackers, you’d think that businesses would have a better handle on managing them.  And yet, a recent survey by Pulse on behalf of Hitachi ID has found that almost 30% of companies have run into trouble with passwords for critical systems being lost when employees leave, leaving them unable to access key services or tools.

Things have certainly improved from the days where employers had to be constantly concerned about employees using easily guessed passwords or reusing the same password across multiple platforms and services, the explosion of apps and services requiring their own passwords has opened new challenges in password management, making the tracking of all credentials exponentially more complicated.

Just as importantly, the survey seems to indicate many companies realize they have gaps in their password management, with only 5% of respondents believing their company could prevent an employee from leaving with their passwords, and only 7% being extremely confident they could properly terminate access, transfer passwords, and maintain business continuity if they had to let an employee go on short notice.
