Trends To Watch: What’s coming down the pike for cybersecurity

A report from CB Insights discusses five new technology trends still in the experimental phases, which may emerge in the near future as viable techniques capable of assisting in ensuring an organization possesses a robust set of cybersecurity defenses. AS reported in Tech Republic, these techniques, which work to react to both immediate issues and longer term problems, include:

  • Large scale authentication of digital media, with the intent of fighting “deepfakes”, and other deliberately deceptive visual media.
  • Integration of modern security with open source software, so as allow for rapid patching in the event of identification of vulnerabilities.
  • Zero-knowledge proofs, which represent privacy schemes that allow users to confirm knowledge of specific information without the disclosure of that information, potentially eliminating the need for passwords
  • Acceleration of homomorphic encryption, which allows for working on data while still in an encrypted state, reducing the threat of breaches when used either locally or on the cloud.
  • Incorporation of blockchain security tools (or smart contract security) to help secure blockchain systems and identify potential attacks.

While it’s unclear as to which of these new techniques will ultimately win widespread adoption, all speak to the continued need for innovation in cybersecurity approaches as cyberattacks continue to grow in number and complexity.
