Travel and cybersecurity

A digital security survey conducted by ObserveIT has found that many workers are exposing themselves to cybersecurity risks when working while traveling – 77% of respondents to the survey indicated they were connecting to the Internet via free or public WiFi, with 63% of respondents also indicating they were using public WiFi connections to access work files or email. “While technology has enabled people to be productive regardless of location, it’s also creating new ways for hackers to infiltrate otherwise secure systems,” says ObserveIT CEO Mike McKee.

These survey results should be a concern for all IT security workers, especially when paired with the responses that only 17% of employees consistently used a VPN when connecting to networks, and 49% of employees were unaware of organizational policies on cybersecurity while traveling. “Organizations can’t just focus on what’s happening within their four walls. Rather, they need to take a holistic approach that puts security first, wherever work is getting done,” says McKee.
