Training for Trust

The results of a recent global survey from ObserveIT highlighted the challenges organizations face when attempting to balance showing trust for employee judgement in matters of cybersecurity, and maintaining security for devices and data. With cybersecurity incidents involving employee and contractor negligence (up 26% since 2016) and criminal and malicious insiders (up 53% since 2016) both on the increase, there is an understandable desire for companies to monitoring employee actions to ensure compliance with processes.

Key takeaways from the survey include:

  • 46% of respondents indicating their organizations do not have confidence in their employees to keep data and assets secure, with higher percentages reported in public sector (53%) and IT organizations (52%)
  • 43% of respondents noted their organizations lack policies regarding employees taking data with them when leaving a company
  • Employees are often unaware of the risk associated with data losses or breaches, with 60% of companies not explaining contractually specified penalties for the exposure of information
  • IT leaders continue to feel undervalued, with only 36% of respondents stating that cybersecurity is important to general employees within their companies

Reponses to the survey were taken from 2500 public and private sector employees around the world, with additional input from interviews with 600 senior members of IT organizations on the topic of trust in the workplace.
