A recent article in Continuity Central kicks off with a novel approach to business continuity — a list of ways to guarantee failure. While this list is a tongue in cheek way to examine common pitfalls on the path to effective business continuity planning, Acumen consultancy director and author Andy Osborne uses this method to delve into the reasons why companies stick to the tried and true when it comes to analyzing business impact.
Although considering each element of the impacts to a working business—such as recovery time objectives and the implications of those impacts—is crucial, many analyses involve too much detail, writes Osborne.
“A more pragmatic and less time-consuming approach, particularly if you don’t aspire to certification to a specific standard, is to come at it from a slightly different angle, starting with an assessment of an activity’s recovery time objective and then considering the impacts if that recovery time objective isn’t met, rather than the other way around,” he writes. “The end result is usually spookily similar — provided, of course, that the right people are involved.”
