Thinking about IT: Technology companies turn to artificial intelligence to help manage challenges

While ChatGPT has drawn much of the attention among new applications of artificial intelligence, companies are already developing more specialized tools which they hope will both assist and reshape other industries.

Looking to assist in the management of extreme weather associated with climate change, Google has released a new set of planning tools intended to help push alerts to users in affected areas, according to an article in Engadget. “Working in a partnership with the Global Heat Health Information Network, the tool with let people know of expected start and end dates for extreme heat events, and provide information about potential medical concerns associated with heat. The company also announced an expansion of their Tree Canopy tool, which uses AI to evaluate tree coverage in urban areas and help assist with future development of urban forestry.

Microsoft has instead looked toward the application of AI toward cybersecurity, with their release of Microsoft Security Copilot, which draws on GPT-4. Specifically intended to help cybersecurity professionals, the tool can generate reports, describe risks associated with active vulnerabilities, or identify related accounts, and receive feedback from the user to improve future accuracy, according to an article in CNBC. For Microsoft, the hope is that it will be used widely by customers, rather than being restricted to a limited number of people.
