In an opinion piece in The Guardian, John Naughton discusses Apple’s new set of privacy rules for iCloud users in China. At issue is Apple’s announcement about the storage and management of mainland Chinese Apple user’s iCloud data with Guizhou-Cloud Big Data (GCBD) — and the right of the data management company and Apple to access that data.
“Henceforth everything that Chinese Apple users store in the cloud will be accessible to the Chinese state,” writes Naughton. “And although the data is encrypted, Apple will, apparently, have to store the encryption keys in China – which means that its joint venture will have to comply with the cybersecurity law and provide them to the Chinese authorities if required.”
Naughton feels that this runs counter to Apple’s previous stances on privacy, such as refusing to unlock the San Bernardino shooter’s iPhone for the FBI.
