In the Harvard Business Review, writers David Edelman and Vivek Sharma explore six different scenarios for how artificial intelligence (AI) could potentially disrupt business operations.
AI being considered a disruptive force is nothing new, but Edelman and Sharma argue the most effective way to talk about AI is to work through their suggested scenarios to understand how it may affect the operations of a particular business.
AI is moving too fast, they argue, “to take the conventional approach of commissioning a strategy team or a consultancy to bring solid data on trends to use for discussion.” The alternative, they say, is to foster a structured discussion that examines different hypothetical situations. This way, boards can talk through how AI might affect different areas, such as company culture, and come up with tangible strategies to prepare for what’s to come.
The six scenarios they recommend exploring are:
- Gains through granularity
- A reshaped partner ecosystem
- Snowballing risk and expansive regulatory regimes
- Radical cost transformation
- Value proposition redefinition
- Obsolescence
