The Big App-le

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced the upcoming summer release of the first in a set of tools intended to assist residents against suspicious online activity. This free app, titled NYC Secure, will alert users of potential threats, such as a malicious wireless network or app, and offer the user advice on how to protect their device. This advice will only direct the user as to possible actions, such as disconnecting from the network, and will not force activities on the device. It is also stated that the app will also not collect or transmit any personal data. The release of this app is only one step the city is taking to increase the cybersecurity of residents. Efforts will also be made to improve the security of public Wi-Fi networks, through the use of Quad9, a free public cybersecurity tool produced by Global Cyber Alliance, IBM, and Packet Clearing House.

“In order to stay a step ahead of cyber criminals that are continuously finding new ways to hack devices, we must invest in the safety of the digital lives of our residents,” said citywide chief information security officer Geoff Brown, according to Tech Crunch. “While no individual is immune to cybersecurity threats, this program will add an extra layer of security to personal devices that often house a huge amount of sensitive data.”
