Stressed Out: The continued cybersecurity staffing shortage is putting increased pressures on teams and individuals

Even before the pandemic, organizations were struggling to fill all available cybersecurity positions, as demand far outstripped resources. With the rapid shift to remote work for many industries in response to COVID, as well as an increasing emphasis on online sales for businesses, that resource crunch has only grown worse, leading to concerns about already stretched thin teams risking burnout and collapse.

Writing for TechTarget.com, Nabil Hannan, managing director at NetPSI, offers a set of suggestions to help both attract new people to the field, and reduce the stress on those already working with cybersecurity, including:

  • Ramping up training, particularly for new employees;
  • Not encouraging overwork by offering too many incentives;
  • Adopting automation techniques, for repetitive or redundant tasks; and
  • Encouraging individuals from a wider range of backgrounds to consider cybersecurity as a viable career option.
