Staying Home: A majority of Americans would rather rebuild after a natural disaster than move

A new poll from NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist reinforces the reluctance of Americans living in areas subject to natural disasters to move, rather than stay and rebuild. With only one thirds of respondents saying their preference would be to relocate, it looks like people are generally willing to accept the risks to stay where they currently are.

While there were variations based on age, political alignment, wealth, and other factors, all groups had a majority siding with the idea of staying put and attempting to rebuild in the wake of a disaster.

Among the other findings was the statistic that roughly 3 in 10 respondents had been personally affected by an extreme weather event in the last two years, but only about 1 in 10 of those affected had indicated it had made them more likely to move from their current locations.
