Stating It Clearly: New York announces its first statewide cybersecurity strategy

Looking to help build up the state’s cyberdefenses, the government of New York has announced its first statewide cybersecurity strategy. With the state having recently suffered numerous cyberattacks on schools, municipalities, and healthcare systems, the strategy is seeking to modernize systems, improve cybersecurity education, encourage more workers in cybersecurity fields, and build robustness and cybersecurity defenses at the county level, and around critical infrastructure. The strategy also calls for increased engagement with both county governments and federal agencies, with respect to information sharing, and investigations of cybercrimes.

Says Kathryn Garcia, director of operations for New York State, “Many of the pieces of the strategy plan are already in flight, but we also know that we are only as strong as our weakest link.”

Other states, including Iowa, Michigan, and West Virginia, have previously released cybersecurity strategies, and in March of this year, the Federal Government published the National Cybersecurity Strategy, which covers some of the same ground as in the New York state strategy.

Says Kemba Walden, acting National Cyber Director, “Certainly we appreciate points of alignment, where appropriate, between state cyber strategies and the National Cybersecurity Strategy. But we also recognize that cybersecurity at the federal level differs from cybersecurity at the state level in some fundamental ways, and each state will further have its own unique capabilities, resources and requirements.”
