State of Readiness

The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) has released the results of its annual survey of state chief information officers (CIOs). The 2016 Deloitte-NASCIO Cybersecurity Study, intended to shine a spotlight on policy and technology issues facing state government, continued to show that CIOs in each state ranked cybersecurity as a top priority, as they have in the past two years.

Other findings include:

  • Governors are more aware of cyber risk and mitigations, and that cybersecurity is increasingly part of government operations and sustainability with an increase in budget in most states surveyed. Funding, although improved, can still pose problematic, however.
  • Acquiring talent remains a challenge, especially amongst the millennial talent pool, and state agencies are reviewing their methods to address this issue.
  • The top three cybersecurity initiatives for this year are: training and awareness, monitoring/security operations centers (SOC), and strategy.
