Stable Solutions: While IT departments were able to rapidly shift to support remote work, vulnerabilities remain

Although many IT departments managed rapid deployment of resources and skills to a work from home office when the pandemic hit, some of these measures may need to be revisited now that this temporary solution is becoming a new standard, writes Jim Jones, Sr. Cloud Architect at OffsiteDataSync, in HelpNet Security.

As the likelihood of extended offsite work grows, organizations should look into securing these remote assets via appropriate mobile management products, or the institution of group policies that encourage the sure of cloud rather than local storage.

With devices increasingly being physically separated from the network, thought also needs to be given to establishing proper backup of remote data and tools, to ensure nothing critical is lost or disrupted in the event of a disaster or cyberattack, says Jones.  Any loss of data on these remote machines can result in significant costs and disruptions to normal operation.

As dates for return to onsite work remain unclear for many workers, IT will need to continue to invest in ensuring their policies adapt for the long term.
