Small Problems: Small businesses are continuing to struggle to with remote work and cybersecurity challenges

As the economy shows signs of perking up, businesses are still facing big challenges as a result of the pandemic. Commissioned by Verizon, and focusing on small businesses, the report finds that while optimism is growing, many companies are still struggling with the challenges faced by remote work, and catching up to proper security practices at a time when cyberattacks constantly make the news. With this shift to more of a work from home model, respondents indicated:

  • 44% remained concerned about ensuring the security of company networks
  • 72% agreed that working from home increased the potential for cybersecurity threats
  • 68% indicated working from home drove new cybersecurity practices and policies, including improving antivirus programs (54%), use of MFA for logins (50%, and enhancing network security practices (49%)

Similarly, with a tight labor market, these same small businesses are often facing difficulties in filling open positions, with 46% indicating they’ve had difficulties in retaining top talent, and 30% indicating they’d needed to implement new systems or technologies to adjust for an inability to hire or retain people.
