With Israel’s response to the attacks by Hamas still ongoing, Gaza is quickly turning into a humanitarian disaster. Cut off from fuel, and with water only recently restored after pressure from the United States, concerns are growing about the abilities of hospitals to provide services, and for residents to be able to store food without access to electricity, with the only power plant in the area having had to shut down, according to an article in The New York Times.

The provision of humanitarian aid is also in question, as Israel has released a statement that no aid will be allowed into Gaza, while the Egyptian Foreign Ministry has not provided any indication as to whether it would allow aid into the area, instead only directing potential air to the El Arish International Airport.

Says Jan Egeland, general secretary for the Norwegian Refugee Council relief agency, of the need for humanitarian aid, “We must be enabled to bring lifesaving assistance to the people of Gaza as quickly as possible.”

Egeland also noted the need for a pause in military action, observing “Aid workers cannot do their jobs while bombs are falling everywhere.”
