Canada’s still new cybersecurity agency has reached out to the banking sector, with the purpose of establishing a partnership to make Canada a less appealing target for cybercriminals, according to The Financial Post. The agency, known as the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security was established only six months ago, with the goal of improving protection of federal systems, while also offering their developing expertise to Canada’s private sector.

Speaking at the Canadian Bankers Association (CBA) summit, Scott Jones, head of the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, told those in attendance, ”Congratulations, you’re the big fish,” as they’re prime targets for phishing attacks. Jones also noted the agency is seeking to work through collaboration, rather than imposing requirements, stating “We need to get to the point where we trust each other enough to say, ‘I think there’s something strange going on,’ and it’s going through cybersecurity professionals, not lawyers.”

The CBA has indicated its support for a potential joint approach between private and public sectors for cybersecurity, with Neil Parameter, president and CEO of the CBA saying in a release, “cybersecurity and resiliency are collaborative priorities for all banks in Canada, the financial sector more broadly and, indeed, society as a whole.”
