Setting the Standard: The White House releases the first iteration of their National Cybersecurity Management Plan

Last week, the White House released the previously announced National Cybersecurity Strategy Implementation Plan, intended to act as a foundation for a national roadmap of cybersecurity responsibilities, and for the boosting of both public and private section cybersecurity resilience.

Covering more than 65 federal initiatives, the plan looks to help drive toward a set of five key pillars:

  • The defense of critical infrastructure;
  • The disruption and dismantling of threat actors;
  • The driving of security and resilience;
  • Investment in future resilience; and
  • The forging of partnerships internationally to support shared cybersecurity goals.

To help support these goals, the plan highlights two critical areas related to the need for more capable cybersecurity actors, and the need to promote and support investment in long-term cyber resilience.

Says Drew Bagley, vice president and Counsel of Privacy and Cybersecurity Policy for CrowdStrike to TechRepublic, the plan “is especially important because many items in the Strategy include multiple dependencies. While the Implementation Plan covers a lot of ground, it’s clear that the authors applied significant focus on the broad application of Secure-by-Design/Secure-by-Default principles.”

Says Rick McElroy, principal cybersecurity strategist for VMware, to TechRepublic, “The current NCSIP shows this administration’s commitment to cybersecurity, building on executive orders and funds dedicated to transforming and modernizing the federal government’s cybersecurity posture, which is long overdue.”
