Service Denied: DDoS are growing in frequency and severity

Those behind distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks are getting more creative in their approaches, and that’s meaning more headaches for cybersecurity experts. With attacks of this type up by 11 per cent over last year, there was already cause for concern, but these new approaches are making it more difficult to defend against them, according to an article in ZDNet.

With the pandemic having pushed more resources toward online services as businesses look to keep themselves fully operational while large portions of their staff remain remote, many companies are finding themselves more exposed. Previously, while attackers might only use one source to flood a service, IT teams are seeing more complex attacks, with multiple vectors being regularly used. In recent months, multiple attacks have been observed with 27 or more different vectors being used, allowing attackers to switch rapidly between vectors to make it harder to defend.

These attacks can still be defended against, by keeping with best practices for security, and performing regular testing.
