Sending Aid: While donations of cash and supplies for support of Ukraine have been large, there are challenges in getting it to those who need it

Since the start of the conflict, individuals, organizations, and nations have offered their support in both money and goods to help those affected by the conflict within Ukraine. However, in almost all cases, their attempts to distribute this aid have met challenges and threats, as attacks on both cities and supply routes make it often too dangerous.  Says Dan Stewart, a spokesman for Save the Children, “It’s just incredibly difficult to deliver any kind of response safely when the fighting is as horrendous and constant.”

Even attempts to bring people out of areas of conflict have been difficult, with agreed upon humanitarian corridors often coming under attack. Says Steve Taravella, senior spokesman for the World Food Program, “We’re really in a race against time to preposition food in areas where fighting is expected to flare up.”

Rahul Singh, executive director of GlobalMedic, a Toronto-based disaster relief organization, has also spoken of the challenges of delivering aid within the country. Says Singh, “The logistics are really hard on us. There are so many areas under attack that have street fighting every day, bombardments every day. It’s very difficult for us to move in areas like that.” Singh also notes the challenges of even operating large trucks within the country, a concern echoed by David Beasley, executive director of the World Food program, who has spoken of the challenges of finding drivers in Ukraine, with many able-bodied Ukrainian men being involved in the fighting.
