Security First: Companies are increasingly understanding cybersecurity is an organization issue rather than an IT issue

While IT and cybersecurity departments have always worked hard to ensure the most robust defenses against intruders, their efforts have often been treated by those in the executive suite more as a cost to a company, rather than a benefit. With bigger and bigger hacks regularly making the news, that’s beginning to change. The Global Risks Report 2022 highlights cybersecurity failure as a key short and medium-term threat, according to business leaders.

This increasing recognition, according to an article in WE Forum, is allowing organizational leadership to better promote the importance of a strong cybersecurity ethos via:

  • Recognizing it as a strategic business priority, with cyber-risk also being businesss-risk
  • Pushing cybersecurity governance as a requirement at the board level
  • Driving a culture focused around cyber-resilience, and promoting cyber-accountability among employees
  • Assembling a talented cybersecurity team, with a diverse set of skills capable of responding to changing threats
  • Emphasizing the importance of public-private collaboration on cybersecurity matters, to share information on threats, solutions, and approaches

Many of the technological challenges of cybersecurity are already understood. By pushing the importance of cybersecurity from the top down, and getting employees engaged in supporting it, organizations can reap considerable benefits.
