Securing the Blockchain

Blockchain technology remains a subject of considerable interest to those looking for methods to improve security. While not applicable to every situation, potential applications have emerged, or are emerging, across various fields of cybersecurity.

According to an article by Forbes contributor Andrew Arnold, the most notable of these possibilities include:

  • The establishment of decentralized storages solutions, which allow users to use blockchains with cloud solutions to archive data, with the easy ability to add or remove access to approved individuals at any time, while also preventing hackers from having a single unified target or repository to attack.
  • The development of “smart” IoT device networks, which can interpret data from the unified whole to determine when any individual devices are demonstrating unusual behavior and lock them out accordingly without relying on direct actions from a central authority.
  • Increased security in private messaging, via the creation of a standard set of security protocols that apply to all members, and applicable messaging platforms.

While not every problem has a blockchain-based solution, the benefits offered by the decentralization inherent in blockchain make its application an interesting source for research for cybersecurity matters.
