Securing Software: Guarding against hidden dependencies

In an article for the World Economic Forum, Luna Rohland discusses the importance of ensuring software supply chains are properly safeguarded against hidden dependencies.

With increased connectivity comes increased risk. Most modern software is not built entirely from custom code. Instead, open-source software (OSS) is estimated to make up 70-90%. This often leaves not only general IT at risk due to complex interdependencies, but operational technology and industrial systems across sectors like energy, agriculture, and healthcare as well.

Rohland outlines key challenges, such as third-party weaknesses and unpatched vulnerabilities in these open-source components, before going on to highlight possible actions that could help secure software supply chains. Secure coding practices, continuous monitoring, strengthening vendor management, and adopting a resilience mindset could go a long way in safeguarding software in this new digital age.
