Searching for Staff: Industry needs to look outside traditional backgrounds to find new cybersecurity staff

As cyberattacks have continued to ramp up in both frequency and complexity, companies have often struggled to fill their open positions with suitable professionals. Instead, with demand far outstripping supply, organizations have often left positions open, pushing their existing cybersecurity professionals harder, and leading to employee burnout. This, in turn, has often led to high turnover, and a further aggravation of staffing problems.

To help address these staffing gaps, perhaps it’s time for companies to look outside the traditional cybersecurity background, and instead consider bringing in professionals from different fields to both help increase the number of resources and provide a broader set of skills and experiences, such as software engineering, IT support, or data analysis, argues an article in Security Intelligence. While some additional training may be required for those hired under such a program to get them up to speed on cybersecurity best practices, the potential benefits can easily outweigh any additional costs.
