Running to Stand Still: Pressure on cybersecurity teams continues to grow, as cyberattacks keep becoming more frequent

After several years of unexpected strain with the rapid shift to remote workforces, continually increasing numbers of attacks, and high levels of turnover among staff, cybersecurity teams are starting to run into issues with burnout and exhaustion. And with companies already struggling to properly fill key openings for their cybersecurity teams, this potential burnout opens them up to even further staffing challenges.

As it is, a recent survey of IT decision makers by ThreatConnect has found that roughly half of private sector businesses have gaps in their technical IT security skills, and roughly a third of IT managers and a quarter of IT directors are considering leaving their current employers, with high levels of stress being cited as a reason for considering leaving by 27% of respondents, reports ZDNet.

Says Josh Yavor, chief information security officer at Tessian, of the risks created by exhausted cybersecurity employees, “Human error is one of the biggest causes of data breaches in organizations, and the risk of causing a data breach or falling for a phishing attack is only heightened when employees are stressed and burned out.”
