Role Playing: Experts in physical security are seeing their tasks change as workers continue to shift offsite

Those historically responsible for ensuring the physical security of facilities are now finding themselves with new responsibilities, with many offices emptied out in favor of remote work, and employees nervous about possible returns. A recent survey from Traction Guest found 84% of employees were somewhat or very concerned about returning to in-office work, and a similar number stating an increase in their concern about their physical wellbeing in the office since the start of the pandemic, as reported in an article in Security Magazine.

It is these numbers that experts in physical security must consider, as they work to ensure the safety of those who may be returning to company facilities. Says Brian Phillips, director of global security strategy at Traction Guest, “The new standard of population and facilities risk management requires us to think about everyone entering a facility as one universal risk management challenge. From how any individual enters a building to how they interact with others on premises, physical security professionals will be tasked with ensuring a safe and secure visit for all.”

A common concern about surveyed employees is the introduction of new technology to help ensure employee health and safety, with many citing upgrades like touchless sign-in technology. Says Phillips of the importance of physical security specialists, “I think that now is the time to shine for security executives. They can show their value proposition by incorporating technologies that not only secure the business but also mitigate new risks caused by COVID-19.”
