Rio Stages Emergency Drill

In the midst of widespread concern for security due to the recent attacks in Nice, several countries have adjusted their disaster management protocols. In Rio, as the city prepares for the August 2016 Summer Olympics, the city’s emergency management officials held a large-scale anti-terror drill in mid July, simulating a bomb attack and shooting at the Rio de Janeiro train station, according to German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

“The exercise was very useful, because it allowed us to work within real parameters for the operation and utilization of the troops,” General Mauro Sinott told DW.

Using an explosion and blank rounds, security forces including the special forces, dealt with a situation onboard a parked train at Deodoro train station, reported DW. According to the broadcaster, 38,000 military service members and 47,000 police will make the rounds at the Olympics.
