Repackaging Knowledge: The UPS Foundation seeks to apply their expertise in logistics to help after disasters

The UPS Foundation has been increasingly busy in recent years, as the number of significant disasters has grown. Seeking to use the knowledge gleaned from their position as the largest package delivery company in the world, the UPS foundation has sought to support the delivery of key resources to areas in need, whether that be in the form of food, water, medical supplies, or whatever other critical supplies are needed, according to an article in The Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The foundation has also sought to work with other humanitarian groups to assist them in improving their own logistics management. Says Joe Ruiz, Director of Humanitarian Relief for the UPS Foundation, “We want these organizations to be able to be more effective, so they can respond to two times or three times more people.”

Speaking of the role of the Foundation in providing logistics support, Ruiz also notes “It’s one of the most challenging things that humanitarian organizations can do. You can secure the money to get the supplies, but can you get the supplies to the last mile to the people that need them? That’s the critical role we provide in this space.”

The Foundation has also involved themselves with the response to COVID-19, acting as a distributor for supplies to medical facilities, and also working to develop a system for delivering meals to students who have been previously involved in school lunch programs. Says Ruiz, “What we’ve done with humanitarian relief enabled us to lean in immediately to COVID-19.”
