Remote Control: Cybersecurity for remote workforces

With companies increasingly allowing employees to work remotely, and expecting them to be available at all times of the day, no matter their location, organizations are being forced to consider how to best offer cybersecurity for mobile devices. Additional burdens are placed on the IT department to ensure all these mobile devices will work together seamlessly, and that a lost mobile device won’t result in leakage of company data.

To help ensure a robust cybersecurity solution for these devices, companies should work to ensure all devices connecting remotely to corporate networks are both encrypted and password protected, and doing so using Transport Level Security (TLS). Multi-factor authorization should also be used, and applied solutions should work across all device categories – any solution should consider computers, phones, and tablets, rather than treating them as separate categories. Restrictions should also be placed on what can be accessed from offsite, to prevent the loss or removal of key information from corporate servers. Similarly, access should be restricted to only devices meeting the corporate security standards.

As work continues to shift to twenty four hour expectations, and items like smart phones take on a blend of both personal and professional roles, management of remote devices will continue to grow in complexity. By considering the above, a firm basis can be laid for future developments.
