Real World Lessons: What we can learn from the January 2024 Boeing blowout incident

On January 5, a piece of a Boeing 737 Max aircraft blew out midflight. The incident occurred during an Alaska Airlines flight from Oregon to California, and has since been attributed to missing bolts that had not been attached to the Boeing plane’s door.

In an analysis for Entrepreneur.com, Christopher Salvi and Miguel Aponte take a look at the responses from the CEOs of the companies involved in the incident, exploring their leadership choices and gleaning crisis communications lessons everyone can learn.

The three CEOs include:

  • Dave Calhoun, Boeing
  • Scott Kirby, United Airlines
  • Ben Minicucci, Alaska Airlines

Writers Salvi and Aponte note that each CEO has taken a strategic response to protect their company’s interests. Boeing’s Calhoun focuses on restoring the company’s reputation, they explain, while the United Airlines and Alaska Airlines CEOs take the tack of focusing on operational stability, safety and finances.

While the writers note that each CEO has demonstrated “commendable leadership”, they highlight areas for improvement from which other leaders can also learn – such as increasing transparency to be able to better build back trust.
