Preparedness Pays Off: Lessons from Tampa General Hospital

On September 26 Tampa General Hospital (TGH), the only high-level trauma center in the region, was hit by Hurricane Helene. Barely two weeks later, it was hit again, this time by Hurricane Milton, which made landfall near Sarasota on October 9. 

In an article for HealthLeaders, Amanda Norris breaks down seven lessons TGH learned after successfully navigating Hurricane Ian in 2022. From starting preparations as early as possible, to practicing disaster drills year-round and making sleeping arrangements for staff, these strategies successfully carried TGH through Hurricane Helene, one of the worst storms to hit Tampa Bay in a century, and then again through Hurricane Milton.
