Pop Culture Meets Disaster Education: A decade later, the CDC’s Zombie Apocalypse training is fondly remembered

It was back in 2011 when the CDC decided to jump aboard the pop culture bandwagon in an attempt to better promote the importance of disaster preparedness, with the release of their Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse campaign.  Designed to draw attention from the burst in zombie-based horror films at the time, as well as he Walking Dead show by AMC, the campaign included a 42-page graphic novel about a spreading disease, with a checklist at the end offering preparedness tips, according to KLCC.

Even though more than a decade has passed, a lot of people still maintain fond memories of the campaign, and what it was trying to achieve.  Erica Fleishman, OSU professor and head of the Oregon Climate Change Institute, notes that there’s a lot from the campaign that can still be applied to current disaster preparedness techniques, saying “There are some differences, but a lot of the immediate emergency preparedness especially and where it relates to trying to minimize loss of life and real human suffering, it’s quite similar.”  Fleishman also compliments the campaign’s enduring recognition of the importance of knowing who in your neighborhood may face communication or mobility challenger, in an emergency situation.
