Playing Defense: Why current cybersecurity strategies are making it too easy for attackers

The proliferation of personal and corporate devices is making it too easy for hackers, says Manny Rivelo, CEO of Forcepoint, where each extra piece of hardware represents a new potential point of attack. And with that trend unlikely to reverse anytime soon, in an environment where people are expected to always be online and always be available, a new approach needs to be emphasized to ensure personal and corporate security.

To that measure, Rivelo recommends adopting a “Never trust, always verify” philosophy, where the default for anything is a zero-trust philosophy. To support that, Rivelo suggests pushing a solution that monitors and controls access continually through all vectors via which data can be transferred, whether email, across the Web, or via assorted apps, paired with built-in threat protection. Moreover, in an environment where branch offices and remote workers are plentiful, he recommends ensuring that these security measures be pushed out to encompass all edges of networks and connecting devices. With such approaches, the transition to zero trust, with all the associated security benefits, can be made simpler.
