Pick and Choose: How can your organization decide on the right disaster recovery strategy for their needs?

It’s not always easy to determine what sort of disaster recovery solution your company may need. Solutions often emphasize full replication of data centers, or duplicates on private clouds, which can involve costs beyond that supportable by smaller organizations, according to an article in Computer Weekly. Instead, companies may find a need to balance between different tools, choosing to allow for longer recovery times for less critical services or data sets, while emphasizing availability for key systems.

To help support this concept, companies should maintain a robust data and information management policy, which should assist in identifying these key resources and tools. Similarly, IT should engage in data discovery, to confirm where data is held, in terms of both storage (cloud, server, or local machine) and geographic locations. This data discovery has the added benefit of helping to ensure a company is in compliance with legal or regulatory requirements. Additionally, disaster recovery solutions should be revisited regularly, as shifting company needs may result in updates over time.
