Overexposed: The rapid growth in attack surfaces will leave cybersecurity teams struggling to protect their organizations

A new report from Voyager 18, the in-house research team for Vulcan Cyber, points to a set of seven trends that cybersecurity professionals will need to be aware of as 2023 progresses, with many of these trends emphasising the challenges posed by an increase in attack surfaces, as reported by Security Magazine. Following on the rapid growth of remote work during the COVID 19 pandemic, many organizations now find themselves struggling due to the reliance on poorly secured cloud services, growing numbers of mobile devices, and increased exposure via IoT devices. All together, these items represent a challenge for cybersecurity teams to lock down without compromising the utility of the services these devices provide.

Just as importantly, according to Security Magazine, cybersecurity is continuing to struggle with the challenge of addressing user behavior, as phishing and social engineering attacks become more sophisticated, with hackers attempting to persuade employees to willingly hand over their credentials, or otherwise expose critical data.

All together, these routes for attack will push security teams toward following industry best practices, whether via improved training, the introduction of multi-factor authentication, or implementation of zero-trust strategies.
