Out of Site and Out of Mind: Many organizations have not adequately considered the cybersecurity needs of employees working remotely

The rapid shift of most workers being in office to being remote has set new challenges for cybersecurity workers, as the number of points they have to protect has increased exponentially. Instead of focusing their efforts on guarding a centralized set of devices, they’re forced to contend with thousands of points of potential access, at a time when scams and hacks related to COVID-19 are rapidly increasing. A survey conducted by Dimensional Research indicated that 71% of IT and security professionals have observed an increase in threats, related to the increase in remote working, with mobile devices in particular posing challenges.

Phishing and malicious domain attacks in particular have seen a notable rise, as cybercriminals take advantage of interest in COVID-19 to trick individuals into visiting fake sites or handing over credentials.

To help protect their users, IT professionals need to continue to emphasize prevention, both through education and aggressive action to block threats as they come by ensuring all security measures are current and up to date.  At the same time, efforts to reduce the number of vendors to simplify maintenance and update of security devices and protocols can also assist in ensuring robust security for remote workers.
