Out of Place: The war in Ukraine is expected to result in over four million refugees in the coming months

With hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians already having left the country due to the recent war, the scope of aid needed by displaced persons is already enormous. A recent estimate from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), however, shows that this is only the beginning of an event that could lead to over four million people seeking at least temporary shelter in surrounding nations, and another twelve million people needing humanitarian assistance within the country. Says Janez Lenarčič, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, “We are witnessing what could become the largest humanitarian crisis on our European continent in many, many years. The needs are growing as we speak.”

While assistance is being pledged by other nations, with the US government committing $54 million in humanitarian assistance, and the European Commission announcing an increase in funding for emergency aid programs for those affected by the conflict of €90 million, it is unclear as to how much more will be needed. The UN is already seeking to coordinate an additional $1.7 billion to help provide support over the next three months, for those both in Ukraine, and the surrounding countries.
