On The Way Out: The American response to the attacks at the Kabul airport

Amidst the horrific loss of human life and chaos with the withdrawal of American forces from Afghanistan, the devastating scenes from the Kabul airport played out on television screens around the world. President Biden, in his first appearance after the attacks, had to balance a careful line between sorrow, empathy and resolve — and, according to Forbes contributor and crisis management expert Edward Segal, provides perspective on an international scale for businesses dealing with their company’s issues.

“Today’s deadly attacks outside the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghanistan and their immediate aftermath underscore important lessons about managing crisis situations that business leaders should remember when they are dealing with their own corporate crises,” writes Segal.

Among the recommendations laid out by Segal, clear and straightforward communication is first and foremost — laying out plans and identifying actions already taken, as well as confirmation of existing data and a map for future initiatives. Setting guidelines in order to manage expectations, and responding to criticism in a productive manner is also paramount, according to Segal.
