On The Road Again: As business travel returns, consider what you need to do to maintain your cybersecurity

For much of the last year, business travel has been replaced with Zoom meetings and other offsite calls. With the pandemic slowly being brought under control, however, business travelers are being sent out on the road again, it’s important to refresh yourself on the potential cybersecurity threats you and your devices may face as you head out on your next business trip.

While the exact threats and challenges may vary depending on region, there are some threats that should be thought of as priorities. An article in Security Intelligence details some of these threats, including US Customs and Border Protection agents being allowed to search phones and laptops, the need to protect medical information in the form of vaccine passports or personal information in the form of digital travel credentials. The article also discussed new ways to hack into phones via compromised scannable QR codes or through bypassing security on cars.

Based on these new threats to data that the business traveler faces, the article calls for new assumptions and practices around cybersecurity to be developed. “On the outside, you should travel with a wiped second phone containing the minimum apps you need,” says writer Mike Elgan. “Other travel cybersecurity practices will be evolving quickly over the next few years as we adjust to the new environment.”
