On the Line: With COVID-19 forcing many companies to expand remote work, the importance of cybersecurity is growing

Often an afterthought for corporations, cybersecurity is suddenly finding itself at the center of attention, as the COVID-19 virus has pushed many workers from the more easily secured office environment, to remote settings.  With this shift, pressure has ramped up to ensure offsite employees are able to access company resources in a swift, secure, and reliable manner.

Says Thomas Hatch, CTO and co-founder of SaltStack, “We are entering a period of major economic transition, and even if things go back to exactly the way they were – which is unlikely – the transition period marks a point in time where there are distinct opportunities for a new and more aggressive type of cyberattack that is more interested in damaging or slowing business rather than the traditional goal of skimming money from many parties.”

To support this, companies will need to inject in their IT and cybersecurity areas, with potential for growth in such regions as cloud migration, identity and access management, patch management, threat monitoring, and general security awareness and cyber hygiene.  Says Charles Raglan, security engineer at Digital Shadows, “It’s likely that many companies will be working to implement secure remote working strategies as part of long-term planning as a result of the pandemic.”
