Off Field Security

Although there is much attention in the cybersecurity world on securing public institutions and utilities, as well as privately held companies, one area worth examining is the realm of professional sports. An article in Security Intelligence takes a look at high profile sporting events as targets for cyber criminals. Although such attacks have not yet occurred, the threat is there, according to Security Intelligence: “From infecting high-profile websites with malicious code to dangling noteworthy games and matches as bait in phishing campaigns, criminals use these events as just another means to steal money and data from unsuspecting individuals and organizations.”

In addition, according to the article, high tech advances meant to protect the arena or field may actually open up new vulnerabilities through live streaming, mobile apps and even data such as medical records and customer email addresses. “A data breach could put the entire competition in jeopardy — not to mention the reputational, financial and regulatory consequences that could befall the event organizers,” writes security experts Domenico Raguseo, Mike Spradbery and Jamie Caffrey.

The article recommends adapting a security immune system paired with cognitive technology: identifying what crucial data should reside in the cloud, securing Wi-Fi and mobile devices, and other tactics to ensure that events occur smoothly and with minimized risk.
