(Non) Profiting Through Preparedeness

With hurricane season still in process, it’s important for nonprofit organizations to consider what actions they’ll need to take if they find themselves in the path, or even at the edges, of a storm. Biztech identifies some recovery tips in a recent article.

To begin with, all organizations should work on creating a disaster recovery plan to help with both identifying critical data and resources and ensuring how these resources can be protected. Once prepared, this plan should be regularly revisited to ensure employees are ready to deploy it, and to update the plan as the circumstances of the nonprofit changes.

Efforts should also be made to ensure redundancy in system, whether in the form of data backups to offsite locations or the cloud, and the addition of backup power supplies to offices. If an office can’t be fully secured, it may also be best to look at powering down critical equipment to minimize damage in the event of power surges or other potential sources of disruption. The possibility of telework options should also be considered, so that employees and customers will be able to receive key updates, even if an office’s landlines are temporarily knocked out of service.

While nothing can fully protect an organization from disruptions after a natural disaster, these guidelines will help to minimize damage and speed up recovery, once the disaster has passed.
