National Resilience: The Canadian federal government launches an emergency preparedness awareness campaign

Seeking to improve awareness of emergency preparedness, the Canadian federal government has recently launched a public campaign to help educate residents on the more common natural disasters and emergencies in their regions. According to a Government of Canada press release, one in ten Canadians have prepared their home for a weather-related emergency or natural disaster. The program is being introduced on digital platforms in March, and will also be rolled out via radio ads later in the year. A website to support the campaign has also been established, providing a spread of useful information, tips, guides, and other resources to help people prepared their own plans suitable for the disasters they’re more likely to be subject to.

“The Government of Canada is proud to launch a national public awareness campaign on the importance of emergency preparedness,” said Bill Blair, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness in a statement. “This emergency preparedness campaign will encourage people to learn about the risks they face in their area and encourage all Canadians to take action to mitigate these risks.”

The program is seen as a key part of Canada’s emergency management strategy in terms of building resilience, while also aligning with a recent commitment from the federal government to develop a national climate change strategy.
