Moving Earth: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is looking to provide disaster management training to those living in areas prone to landslides

Due to issues of access for first responders and the fact that many locals are the first on scene at landslides, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s Disaster Management Cell is providing disaster management training to Mumbai residents, reports The Indian Express.

“Most of the areas that have been identified as landslide-prone do not have proper access for machinery and rescue teams,” Director of BMC’s Disaster Management Cell Mahesh Narevekar told a workshop on flood management, according to The Indian Express. “For example, Bharat Nagar in Chembur and Ambedkar Nagar in Malad east where many lost lives during the disaster were inaccessible for rescue machinery. This also causes a delay in reaching help from the authorities.”

The training is in response to such disasters as landslides at Vikhroli and Chembur, which accounted for 29 deaths. The new initiative is scheduled to start on May 15th, with BMC also updating its mobile application to include alerts for heavy rainfall, floods and rising temperatures.
